Parents Reveal Bedtime as Most Stressful Part of Day in New Survey
Bedtime Tops Parenting Stress Survey for Sleep-Deprived Parents

A recent survey conducted by baby care brand Rascals has revealed that bedtime is the most stressful part of the day for many parents. According to the data, 32% of parents identified managing the bedtime routine as the most challenging aspect of parenting, with the number rising to 36% for those with children under the age of two.

Nighttime Diaper Changes a Major Source of Stress

The survey found that nighttime diaper changes are a leading cause of sleep disruption. An overwhelming 97% of parents stated that leak protection is the most important feature they consider when choosing diapers, as leaks often lead to waking and additional stress.

Erin Junker, a pediatric sleep consultant and founder of The Happy Sleep Company, explained to the Toronto Sun that small disruptions can significantly impact sleep. “Small disruptions that can impact sleep often include things like loud noises external to the baby’s room, like an older sibling yelling or a loud vehicle on the street,” she said. To mitigate noise, Junker recommends using a sound machine, while blackout curtains can help keep early morning sunlight from disturbing the baby.

Seasonal Changes and Parental Strategies

Seasonal changes also pose a challenge, with 69% of parents expressing concern about how daylight saving time affects their child’s sleep routine. In response, many parents are taking proactive steps: 52% have tried sleep training, 24% have used special bedding or pajamas, and 15% have switched diaper brands to improve sleep outcomes.

Junker emphasized that there are no specific wrong actions parents take; rather, the focus should be on creating a loving and safe sleep environment. “Parents need to do what works for their individual family to get safe, healthy rest for everyone in that family unit,” she said, acknowledging that solutions vary from family to family.

Creating a Sleep-Conducive Environment

For parents seeking to improve bedtime, Junker advises starting with the sleep environment. “That means dark, quiet, avoiding distractions, and creating a comfortable sleep situation for baby,” she noted. Additionally, using a high-quality overnight diaper that provides leak protection for hours can make a significant difference.

Despite the challenges, 32% of parents consider a smooth bedtime routine a huge win and feel most accomplished as parents when they achieve it. The survey highlights that while bedtime may be stressful, small adjustments can lead to better rest for the entire family.
