The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) is organizing a rally in Calgary on Monday to support continuing care workers. The protest comes in response to the provincial government's decision to dismantle Alberta Health Services, a move that union representatives argue will place additional strain on care facilities across the region.
Workers Voice Concerns
Continuing care workers are expected to gather in downtown Calgary to demand better working conditions and adequate funding for the sector. The AUPE claims that the restructuring of health services threatens the quality of care provided to vulnerable Albertans, including seniors and individuals with disabilities.
“This rally is about standing up for the workers who dedicate their lives to caring for others,” said an AUPE spokesperson. “The government’s plan to dismantle AHS is shortsighted and will only worsen the challenges faced by continuing care facilities.”
Provincial Decision Sparks Outcry
The Alberta government announced earlier this year its intention to break up Alberta Health Services into separate entities, citing a need for improved efficiency and local decision-making. However, critics argue that the move could lead to fragmentation and reduced accountability in the healthcare system.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Olympic Plaza, with speakers from the union and local community leaders. Organizers anticipate a significant turnout, reflecting widespread concern over the future of continuing care in the province.
