Canada is facing a severe crisis in arthritis care, with a new report card revealing that every province and territory is receiving low or failing grades for the second time in three years. In response, Arthritis Society Canada is spearheading the launch of Arthritis Action Now: The Plan to End Arthritis in Canada, an ambitious national strategy designed to tackle the country's leading cause of disability.
Canada's Report Card: A System in Crisis
More than six million Canadians, or one in five people, live with arthritis, costing the economy $45.9 billion annually in healthcare expenses and lost productivity. Despite this staggering impact, arthritis research is critically underfunded, receiving less than two percent of investment from Canada's largest federal health research funder.
The State of Arthritis in Canada Report Card highlights widespread gaps in access to care, treatments, and research. While British Columbia, Ontario, and Québec scored the highest among jurisdictions, no province or territory achieved a grade above a "C." Atlantic provinces, which have some of the highest arthritis rates in the country, continue to face significant challenges, and the Territories are struggling with major data gaps that hinder accurate assessment of the problem.
The Human Toll of Arthritis
Arthritis is not just a condition of aging; it affects children, working-age adults, and seniors, robbing individuals of mobility, mental health, education, employment, and independence. William Ducas of Quebec City, diagnosed in his late teens, shared his experience: "My last teen years were spent in significant pain—at one point, I couldn't even stand for 10 minutes. Thankfully, medication turned things around. Arthritis Action Now gives me hope that the system will better support young people with arthritis—that they'll get diagnosed faster, access treatments sooner, and won't have to fight as hard as I did just to stand."
Arthritis Action Now: A Unified Solution
For the first time, 21 leading organizations across Canada's arthritis ecosystem have united with over 100,000 patients, researchers, clinicians, and advocates behind a bold commitment. This plan provides a comprehensive roadmap to prevent, better treat, and ultimately cure arthritis through targeted advocacy and research investments.
Key policy actions include:
- Reducing wait times for joint replacements
- Connecting patients to experts faster
- Ensuring timely access to critical medications, especially for children
- Reducing arthritis caused by injuries through prevention and awareness programs
- Positioning Canada as a global leader in research, prevention, and treatment innovation
Persistent limitations in available data make it difficult to fully assess the scale of the problem, underscoring the urgent need for improved data collection and transparency. Arthritis remains one of the most underestimated, misunderstood, and chronically underfunded diseases in Canada, and without immediate action, millions will continue to suffer.
