Salmonella Outbreak at Stoney Creek Restaurant Hospitalizes Seven People

Hamilton Public Health is currently investigating a significant salmonella outbreak at Piper Arms restaurant located in Stoney Creek, which has resulted in seven individuals being hospitalized. The outbreak has raised serious concerns about food safety and public health in the area.

Details of the Outbreak

A total of nine cases of salmonella infection have been reported by customers who dined at Piper Arms, situated at 1786 Stone Church Rd. E. Those affected by this foodborne illness outbreak began experiencing symptoms between March 30 and April 5. What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a bacteria commonly found in raw or undercooked foods such as poultry, eggs, meat, and unpasteurized products. It can also spread through contaminated produce or improper food handling practices. According to a news release from Hamilton Public Health, salmonella infection typically occurs 6 to 48 hours after exposure and can last for several days.

While most individuals recover without treatment, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness. The agency emphasized the importance of proper food handling and hygiene to prevent such outbreaks.

Public Health Recommendations

Hamilton Public Health has issued specific advice for anyone who ate at Piper Arms in Stoney Creek and is experiencing symptoms:

  • Seek medical attention if symptoms are severe or worsening. Those without a healthcare provider are advised to call Health811 at 811.
  • Stay home while ill to prevent spreading the infection to others.
  • Practice good hand hygiene to reduce the risk of contamination.
  • Report the illness to Hamilton Public Health by calling 905-546-2424, ext. 7970.

For individuals not experiencing symptoms, the agency recommends continuing to monitor for any signs of illness and adhering to safe food handling practices. As of now, no specific food item has been confirmed as the source of the illness, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Restaurant Response and Ongoing Investigation

Piper Arms, which also operates locations in Burlington, Kitchener, Waterloo, Brantford, Scarborough, Whitby, and Belleville, opened its Stoney Creek branch in January. The restaurant has not immediately responded to requests for comment from media outlets.

A note from the restaurant was posted beneath the red closure notice from Hamilton Public Health, acknowledging "a reported illness concern." The statement read: "Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed to complete a full sanitization and a review of our food safety procedures. The health and safety of our customers and staff is our top priority. We are fully cooperating with public health officials and will reopen once we receive clearance."

The investigation is ongoing as public health officials work to ensure the restaurant is operating safely before allowing it to reopen. This incident highlights the critical importance of food safety regulations and proactive measures to prevent such outbreaks in the future.
