A shooting at a Northern California library left two people dead and an 18-year-old suspect in custody, authorities said Monday.

Shooting at Butte County Library in Chico

The attack occurred on June 22, 2026, at the Butte County Library's Chico branch. Police responded to reports of gunfire and found two victims deceased at the scene. The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident, according to law enforcement officials.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, is being held on suspicion of murder. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive or the relationship between the suspect and the victims.

Chico Police Chief Bill Kunkle said at a press conference that the investigation is ongoing and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. “We are working diligently to piece together the events that led to this tragedy,” Kunkle said.

Community in Shock

The library, a community hub in downtown Chico, was closed following the shooting. Residents expressed shock and grief. “This is a quiet community, and something like this is unthinkable,” said local resident Maria Gonzalez.

Butte County Supervisor Doug Teeter called the shooting “a senseless act of violence” and offered condolences to the victims' families. The library will remain closed until further notice as the investigation continues.

This is the second mass shooting in California in recent weeks, following a deadly incident at a Sacramento nightclub. The state has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, but gun violence remains a persistent issue.

Response and Investigation

Police are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. The suspect is expected to appear in court within 48 hours. The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The shooting has sparked renewed debate about gun control and public safety in libraries and other public spaces. California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement saying, “Our hearts go out to the families affected by this horrific act. We must continue to work to prevent gun violence in all its forms.”
