Jesse Jackson Hospitalized with Rare Neurological Condition

Civil rights icon Reverend Jesse Jackson has been hospitalized while receiving around-the-clock care for a rare neurological condition, according to his Chicago-based organization. The 84-year-old activist's health situation has drawn concern from supporters nationwide.

Rare Neurological Diagnosis

Jackson's organization, Rainbow/PUSH, confirmed late Wednesday that the reverend was hospitalized for observation related to progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). This rare neurodegenerative disorder has been affecting Jackson for more than a decade, though he received an official diagnosis only in April of this year.

The condition shares similar symptoms with Parkinson's disease, which Jackson was diagnosed with over a decade ago. It remains unclear whether Jackson has both conditions or solely PSP. A Rainbow/PUSH spokesperson did not immediately provide clarification when contacted on Thursday.

Longstanding Health Challenges

Jackson disclosed his Parkinson's diagnosis publicly in 2017 but continued to maintain an active public presence despite his health challenges. The two-time presidential candidate made appearances at significant events, including the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, demonstrating his enduring commitment to public service.

In 2023, Jackson stepped down from his leadership role at Rainbow/PUSH, the organization he founded. His son, Yusef Jackson, took over as chief operating officer last year, marking a transition to the next generation of leadership.

Family Support and Current Condition

Jackson's family members have been providing 24-hour care in shifts during recent months. His care team includes his sons U.S. Representative Jonathan Jackson and Jesse Jackson Jr., a former Illinois congressman who is currently seeking reelection.

According to his son Jesse Jackson Jr., who spoke with The Associated Press last month, the civil rights leader has experienced significant physical challenges. Jackson has struggled to keep his eyes open and is unable to speak, but he has developed alternative methods of communication with visiting family and friends.

"He'll squeeze your hand," Jesse Jackson Jr. explained, describing how his father maintains connection despite his physical limitations. The family has requested prayers and support during this challenging time as Jackson continues to receive medical care.

Before his recent hospitalization, Jackson had been using a wheelchair and maintained regular office visits until several months ago, demonstrating his determination to remain engaged with his work and community despite his progressive condition.
