Lumissil Microsystems Announces Breakthrough Automotive LED Driver Technology
Lumissil Microsystems, a prominent leader in LED driver semiconductor solutions, has officially launched the IS32FL3105 family of compact 18×2 matrix RGB LED drivers. This innovative product line is specifically engineered to empower automotive lighting designers in creating superior ambient, interior, cluster, and rear-light experiences. The drivers boast smooth animation capabilities, robust diagnostic features, and scalable in-vehicle connectivity, marking a significant advancement in automotive lighting technology.
Addressing Modern Automotive Lighting Challenges
Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly adopting RGB ambient and animated lighting to enhance vehicle cabin differentiation, support driver-assistance prompts, and facilitate vehicle status signaling. This trend enables more expressive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) effects, but it also presents engineering challenges. Teams must maintain consistent color and brightness across numerous LEDs, execute simultaneous lighting changes, meet electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements, and develop architectures that scale efficiently across multiple lighting nodes.
The IS32FL3105 effectively tackles these issues by supporting 12 RGB "color dots" (18×2 channels) with up to 60mA per LED channel. It utilizes individual LED dimming through 16-bit PWM dithering combined with 6-bit DC scaling, allowing for fine granularity in color mixing, calibration, and smooth dimming transitions. This precision ensures high-quality visual performance in various automotive applications.
Scalable Connectivity and Advanced Features
To accommodate both current modular designs and emerging distributed lighting networks, the IS32FL3105 is programmed via Lumissil's proprietary LumiBus™ protocol, which operates over UART-over-CAN. The family offers two interface options: an integrated CAN physical interface (IS32FL3105A/B) or a UART interface (IS32FL3105C/D) for designs incorporating an external CAN transceiver.
The device family includes two scalable addressing approaches to simplify system expansion. Direct address pin assignment supports up to 25 devices (A/C), while Location Address Assignment (LAA) supports up to 254 devices without address pins (B/D). These options help designers build multi-node lighting systems without excessive pin count or wiring complexity, enhancing flexibility and efficiency.
Enhanced Performance and Reliability
The IS32FL3105 integrates features aimed at reducing system-level electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise and improving power supply integrity during PWM operation. Programmable features include PWM spread spectrum with controlled output transition behavior and 180-degree PWM phase delay between odd/even channels, which helps cancel ripple and reduce instantaneous input current demand.
For designs using an external LED DC/DC converter, the device provides DC feedback (FBO/DCFB) capability. This allows automatic adjustment of the LED anode voltage (VLED) to improve efficiency by minimizing the IS32FL3105's headroom voltage, contributing to better energy management.
Robust Diagnostics and Safety Compliance
For production testing and in-field robustness, the IS32FL3105 captures fault events into readable status registers and signals system-level faults through a shared, open-drain, active-low FAULTB output. Detected and reported faults include LED open/short conditions, CRC errors, watchdog/fail-safe events, and thermal behavior.
The device incorporates a one-time-programmable (OTP) memory to store LED binning and calibration data, along with a state machine-based temperature compensation algorithm. This algorithm helps maintain consistent LED luminance across varying vehicle operating temperatures, ensuring reliable performance. The IS32FL3105 is developed according to ISO 26262 processes, achieving ASIL-B and AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification, which underscores its suitability for safety-critical automotive applications.
This announcement highlights Lumissil's commitment to advancing automotive lighting technology, providing designers with tools to create innovative and reliable lighting solutions for next-generation vehicles.
