WK Kellogg Co. has announced that it is including toys with some of its popular breakfast cereals for the first time in more than 10 years. This nostalgic move coincides with the release of Pixar's anticipated film "Toy Story 5," which is scheduled to hit theaters on June 19.
Why the Return of Cereal Box Toys?
Laura Newman, vice-president of brand marketing at Kellogg, explained the reasoning behind the revival. "Bringing toys back inside the box reintroduces that sense of discovery through a simple, screen-free moment of play that parents can now share with their own kids," she said in a press release. The decision aims to tap into the fond memories of childhood and provide a tangible, interactive experience for families.
The History of Cereal Box Toys
Cereal box toys were once a staple in many popular brands, offering children a small prize with their morning meal. However, they began to disappear as companies sought to cut costs and address safety concerns. Notable incidents include the 2004 recall of Spider-Man watches containing mercury batteries in Kellogg cereals, and the 1998 recall of "cool flute" and "binoculars" toys deemed choking hazards by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
In recent years, there have been occasional returns, such as General Mills' "Cereal Squad" toys in 2020. Classic cereal box toys can also fetch high prices on resale markets like eBay, appealing to collectors seeking a piece of their childhood.
Which Cereal Brands Will Feature Toys?
Starting Sunday, special edition boxes of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, AppleJacks, and Corn Pops will be available on grocery store shelves. Inside each box, consumers will find plastic toys shaped like characters from "Toy Story 5." The promotion is expected to generate excitement among both children and adults who remember the joy of finding a prize in their cereal.
The return of cereal box toys marks a significant shift in marketing strategy, blending nostalgia with modern entertainment tie-ins. As families prepare for the summer movie release, Kellogg's hopes to recreate the magic of morning surprises.
