In the heart of Markham, a custom-built home transcends conventional living spaces by becoming a deeply personal art gallery, where architecture, interiors, and fine art converge to tell a unique story. This residence, designed over approximately one year, spans three floors including a basement and two upper levels, with most living areas concentrated on the main floor. The project was spearheaded by Jane Lockhart, principal designer and founder of Jane Lockhart Design in Mississauga, established in 1997.
A Narrative of Art and Design
"The design intentionally creates a deeply personal narrative where architecture, interiors and fine art intersect," explains Lockhart. Rather than treating art as mere decoration, the design was meticulously crafted to frame, elevate, and honor it. Every aspect, from sightlines and lighting to materials and detailing, was considered through the lens of showcasing the homeowner's photography within a warm, highly livable environment.
Modern Mediterranean Influence
The home embraces a Modern Mediterranean style, which resonated with the homeowner for its natural direction combined with a cleaner, fresh, and modern approach. This aesthetic blends plants, color, warm tones, and natural materials, creating a serene backdrop that enhances rather than competes with the artwork. Most of the art on the walls was created by the homeowner, featuring photography that captures landscapes, architecture, and natural details, with a few paintings from Canadian artists adding diversity.
Key Design Elements
From the moment of entry, the foyer establishes a sense of quiet reverence through craftsmanship, featuring a wooden staircase with glass panelling and marble flooring. Custom wood panelling was installed throughout the home, contributing to a warm and tactile atmosphere. The living room boasts gallery-style photography as a focal point, while the kitchen is equipped with modern appliances, a built-in wine rack, and a nearby bar station. Unique light fixtures adorn the kitchen, dining room, and primary bedroom, adding to the refined ambiance.
Homeowner's Artistic Vision
The homeowner, a talented visual artist, describes herself as a big fan of landscape and architecture photography. "I'm drawn to the play of shadows, patterns and colours in nature – whether it's the grey of rocks, the vibrant hues of fall leaves or the graceful flow of water," she says. She also enjoys enhancing her photos using Photoshop and Lightroom, adding filters and textures to give them an artistic touch. The selected pieces were chosen from her digital files based on shapes and subjects that complemented the rooms and resonated with her personal taste.
Result: A Refined and Immersive Space
"The result is refined, immersive and deeply personal," Lockhart notes. The layered natural materials create a warm atmosphere that acts as a supporting framework, providing a light-reflective canvas that enhances the artwork. The homeowner is thrilled with the outcome, which not only serves as a functional living space but also as a testament to her artistic talents, making the home more than just a residence – it's a reflection of her creative spirit.
