Calgary Family's Beach Outing Turns to Tragedy
A day at the beach turned into a devastating tragedy for a Calgary family visiting California, resulting in the death of a father and the disappearance of his young daughter. The incident occurred on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Garrapata State Beach, located north of Los Angeles.
Desperate Rescue Attempt in Massive Waves
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Yuji Hu saw his five-year-old daughter being swept away by a powerful rogue wave. Without hesitation, he entered the water in a desperate attempt to save her. The conditions were extremely dangerous, with officials reporting waves estimated to be 15 to 20 feet (4.5 to 6 metres) high battering the shoreline.
The girl's mother also rushed into the turbulent ocean to assist in the rescue but was herself pulled under by the fierce currents. She eventually managed to get back to shore, but her husband and daughter remained in the water.
Heroic Efforts and Ongoing Search
An off-duty State Park Peace Officer Lifeguard, Sean Nowland, witnessed the crisis unfolding and sprang into action. The California State Lifeguards reported that Nowland jumped into the ocean to assist civilians who were attempting the aquatic rescue. He helped pull victims from the water and immediately began administering CPR.
Tragically, Yuji Hu was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. The mother was treated for mild hypothermia and has since been released. The search for the five-year-old Calgary girl, however, continues, and she remains missing.
In a statement following the incident, the California State Lifeguards issued a stark warning: “This area of coastline is extremely dangerous and the public is always advised to approach the beach with caution and utmost respect.” This heartbreaking event underscores the unpredictable and powerful force of nature, even during a family outing.
