Anxious Dog Dana Awaits Forever Home at Toronto Humane Society

Toronto Humane Society Appeals for Adoption of Anxious Canine Companion

The Toronto Humane Society is urgently seeking a forever home for Dana, a one-year-old female mixed-breed dog who was surrendered to the shelter in December. According to THS spokesperson Lucas Solowey, Dana is beginning to exhibit signs of fear, anxiety, and stress due to her prolonged stay in the shelter environment.

Dana's Personality and Needs

Solowey describes Dana as a sweet, affectionate, and playful dog with many positive qualities. She is a cuddle enthusiast who enjoys affection and petting, and she shows eagerness and curiosity during walks. Dana can walk calmly on a leash and responds well to some commands, demonstrating responsiveness to new cues.

However, Dana has specific requirements for her new home. She would do best in a household without other dogs or animals, at least initially, as she can be slightly reactive, such as barking, when other dogs are in her space. The shelter is continuing to work on this behavior through training.

Health and Behavioral Background

Dana is in good health but has a history of anxiety. Solowey notes that she was on medication for anxiety in the past, though not currently, but may need to resume it depending on her progress. Ideal adoption would involve continuing her training to help her thrive.

Solowey emphasizes that Dana thrives with positive attention, mental stimulation, and safe exploration opportunities. In return, she offers loyalty, warmth, and endless snuggles to a caring owner.

Adoption Considerations and Process

For families with small children, Solowey recommends an introduction at the shelter first to ensure compatibility, depending on the children's ability to respect Dana's boundaries and be gentle with her. The location of the new home, whether rural or urban, does not matter for Dana's well-being.

Interested adopters can visit the Toronto Humane Society website to start the adoption process and speak with an adoption specialist for a personalized assessment.
