Canadian Tourist Dies While Climbing Tiger Cave Temple Staircase in Thailand
A Canadian tourist tragically died on Sunday while attempting to climb the steep 1,260-step staircase to the summit of Tiger Cave Temple, one of Thailand's most renowned religious landmarks located in Krabi province in southern Thailand.
Collapse During Ascent
The man collapsed near the 1,100th step as he and his wife were making their way to the mountaintop shrine, according to reports from Thai news outlet The Nation. This incident marks the second fatal occurrence on the staircase within just three days.
Rescuers from the Krabi Pitak Pracha Foundation rushed to the scene and found the man unconscious. Fellow tourists and rescue personnel immediately attempted CPR, but unfortunately, they could not revive him.
Challenges in Rescue Operation
Due to the man's weight of over 100 kilograms, rescuers faced significant challenges in retrieving his body. They had to carefully lower him on a stretcher using ropes to navigate the steep hill safely.
His wife, who is from Thailand, informed police that the couple had intended to climb to the top to pay respect to the Buddha statues. She mentioned they had completed the climb before, but her husband complained of dizziness before losing consciousness.
Tiger Cave Temple Significance
Tiger Cave Temple holds deep importance for local Buddhists. The site below the mountain includes meditation caves, shrines, and monk accommodations. At the summit, 280 metres above sea level, visitors find a golden Buddha statue and a sacred Buddha footprint.
The name "Tiger Cave Temple" originates from local legend, as reported by Thailand Magazine. The story suggests that a tiger once lived in the main cave, and a natural rock formation inside resembles a tiger's paw print.
The Demanding Climb
For most travelers, the journey up the 1,260 steps defines the Tiger Cave Temple experience. The staircase zigzags up the limestone peak with steep stretches, featuring steps that vary from narrow and shallow to tall, uneven, and surprisingly steep. Typically, it takes 30 to 60 minutes to reach the top.
Monkeys often linger along the stair railings, observing climbers. While they aren't aggressive if ignored, they are attracted to shiny objects, plastic bags, and loose bottles. Snakes occasionally appear on the steps as well.
Safety Concerns and Previous Incidents
This death occurred just days after a 68-year-old Thai man collapsed and died at the summit on March 26. Earlier incidents have also raised concerns about the risks associated with the climb.
In March 2023, a 70-year-old Australian tourist died after completing the ascent, according to The Nation. In January 2023, a 19-year-old German tourist was injured after fainting and falling near the summit.
Proposed Safety Improvements
Suggestions to improve safety at Tiger Cave Temple have included installing a cable car, restricting access for elderly visitors, and introducing health checks for people attempting the climb. These measures aim to prevent future tragedies while preserving the site's cultural and religious significance.
National Post reached out to the federal department of Global Affairs for comment but has not immediately received a response regarding this incident involving a Canadian citizen abroad.
