The Daily Bread Food Bank has severed its official ties with Feed Scarborough, effective January 31, 2026. The dramatic move comes in response to what Daily Bread CEO Neil Hetherington described as "serious allegations" concerning the Scarborough organization and its founder, Suman Roy.
Allegations Trigger Funding Halt and Police Probe
In a statement to the Toronto Sun, Hetherington confirmed the allegations involve the alleged misuse of funds and concerning governance practices at Feed Scarborough. Upon learning of the issues, Daily Bread acted swiftly, immediately ceasing all funding to the partner organization.
"We retained external legal counsel to conduct a comprehensive financial investigation and shared our findings with the appropriate authorities, including the Toronto Police Service," Hetherington stated. He added that Feed Scarborough prohibited Daily Bread from completing its audit work.
The Toronto Police Service has confirmed its financial crimes unit is now actively investigating the allegations.
Contingency Plans Activated for Scarborough Residents
Assuring the public that food access remains the priority, Hetherington emphasized that Daily Bread has activated robust contingency plans for the Scarborough community. The organization is committed to ensuring an uninterrupted supply of food despite the breakdown in partnership.
The plan includes:
- Establishing alternative food support locations near existing Feed Scarborough sites.
- Expanding capacity through trusted partner organizations.
- Providing funding and operational support to Soso World Ministries, which already operates multiple Daily Bread-supported programs in Scarborough.
- Opening a new food bank location operated by Frontline Connections.
"We are stepping in to protect access to food and support residents during this transition because it is the right thing to do," Hetherington affirmed.
Founder Responds, Vows Cooperation
In his own statement to the Toronto Sun, Feed Scarborough founder Suman Roy expressed disappointment at Daily Bread's decision. He maintained a critical stance on the food bank model itself, stating, "The day there are no more food banks in Toronto will be a good day."
Roy asserted that the allegations against him and his organization remain unproven and expressed confidence that no Daily Bread funds were used for non-charitable purposes.
Regarding the police investigation, Roy said, "I have also contacted Toronto Police voluntarily as I was just made aware through the media of this investigation and will co-operate fully and provide any information they need to speed up this process."
Effective February 2026, Soso World Ministries' food banks will take over the distribution of the food that Daily Bread previously provided through Feed Scarborough.
