Tragic Hiking Accident Near Lions Bay Claims Life of Rescued Mountaineer
A devastating hiking incident on Mount Brunswick near Lions Bay has resulted in the death of one of two rescued individuals, according to the B.C. Coroners Service. The tragic event unfolded during a weekend group hike that involved fourteen people exploring the challenging terrain.
Rescue Operation on Steep Terrain
On Saturday, March 21, 2026, emergency responders were called to Mount Brunswick after two hikers experienced a dangerous fall. North Shore Rescue joined forces with Lions Bay Search and Rescue to conduct what they described as a highly technical rescue operation involving critical injuries in extremely steep conditions.
The sequence of events began when a female hiker slipped and fell a significant distance, sustaining injuries. In an attempt to assist her, a male companion tried to climb down to provide help but tragically lost his footing and fell as well.
Complex Rescue Efforts
Rescue teams faced formidable challenges accessing both injured hikers. Lions Bay rescuers managed to rope their way down to the woman, providing immediate first aid at the scene. Meanwhile, North Shore Rescue personnel had to be hoisted down to reach the man, who was located further down in treacherous terrain just above a waterfall.
An emergency room doctor treated the male hiker at the accident site before he was hoisted out and transferred to paramedics in Lions Bay. Medical personnel reported he was in critical condition during the evacuation. The female hiker was subsequently hoisted out and transported to hospital for treatment.

The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed on Tuesday that the male hiker has since died from his injuries. While the investigation remains officially open, a spokesperson indicated that no further information would be released at this time.
