The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) conducted a massive military campaign throughout 2025, striking close to 20,900 targets across seven different fronts, according to annual operational data released by the military. The year saw the mobilization of more than 300,000 reservists as Israel engaged in what it termed the War of Redemption.
Scope of Operations and Casualties
The IDF carried out approximately 430 distinct operations spanning the Gaza Strip, Iran, Iraq, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen. This widespread campaign resulted in significant military casualties, with 91 soldiers recognized as IDF fatalities after being killed in action or dying during operational activities. An additional 800-plus Israeli troops were wounded in the multi-sector fighting.
The scale of the mobilization was historic. In 2025, the IDF called up around 306,830 reservists, a figure representing nearly six percent of Israel's total military-age population. The year also saw a poignant commitment from abroad, with over 3,000 "lone soldiers"—individuals without immediate family in Israel—relocating to the country to enlist.
Theatre-by-Theatre Breakdown
In the Gaza Strip, the military's operations were extensive. The IDF demolished almost 14,000 structures identified as terrorist infrastructure. In total, Israeli forces attacked about 19,530 targets in Gaza, which included 270 weapons depots. The command structure of militant groups was heavily targeted, with the IDF stating it eliminated four brigade-level commanders, 53 company commanders, and 14 battalion commanders.
The northern front with Lebanon remained highly active. The military documented 1,920 violations of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire by the Iranian-backed Hezbollah. In response, the IDF eliminated 380 terrorists and attacked 950 targets. These strikes hit 210 weapons sites, 140 terrorist structures, and 60 tunnel shafts.
Strikes in Iran, Yemen, and the West Bank
A significant escalation occurred in June with a 12-day war between Israel and Iran. During this conflict, the IDF struck around 1,500 times within Iran, attacking 900 targets. The campaign resulted in the deaths of 30 senior Iranian officials and 11 nuclear scientists, according to the released figures.
Operations against the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists in Yemen involved 20 major attacks, striking 230 targets. Nearly 200 Israeli Air Force fighter jets participated in these raids, which killed 13 senior Houthi figures.
In Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), IDF troops conducted 80 brigade-level operations, eliminating 230 terrorists and arresting another 7,400, including 1,190 Hamas operatives. As a deterrent, the residences of about 30 terrorists were demolished. The military also carried out 20 airstrikes in the region, confiscated approximately 1,340 weapons, and seized 16.48 million shekels (roughly $5.1 million) in funds designated for terror activities.
Domestic Preparedness and War Origins
On the home front, the IDF took measures to protect Israeli civilians. The Home Front Command placed approximately 1,500 portable bomb shelters (miguniot) and renovated an additional 200 shelters.
The military context for 2025's operations traces back to the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, in which some 1,200 people, mostly Israeli civilians, were murdered. Israel describes that attack as the deadliest single-day slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust, an event which sparked the ongoing broader conflict.
