Edmonton police have laid murder charges in the 2021 stabbing death of Allan Freed, 55, following a five-year investigation. The charges were announced on Friday, June 26, 2026.
Victim Found in Central Edmonton
On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at approximately noon, Downtown branch officers responded to a report of a deceased male at 93 Street and 105 Avenue. An autopsy later determined the cause of death was blood loss resulting from stab wounds, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Two Charged with Second-Degree Murder
After what police described as a “complex and lengthy investigation,” the homicide section charged two individuals. Daniel John Sunday, 44, and Ashley Dawn Dion, 33, are each facing one count of second-degree murder. Both accused have been remanded into custody.
“We hope this brings some closure to the family and friends of Allan Freed,” said Edmonton Police Service in a news release. “Our investigators worked diligently over the years to build this case.”
Background on the Case
The stabbing occurred in a residential area near downtown Edmonton. Freed was found deceased at the scene. Despite initial efforts, no arrests were made until now. The delay underscores the challenges of investigating violent crimes without immediate witnesses or clear evidence, according to police.
The Edmonton Police Service continues to urge anyone with additional information to come forward. The case remains under investigation.
