On April 29, 2026, members of several Ontario education unions gathered for a province-wide Day of Action, calling on the provincial government to fix the funding formula for schools. The protest was organized by the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) – Waterloo Region, Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO), and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA).
Key Demands
The unions argue that the current funding formula is outdated and fails to meet the needs of students and educators. They are demanding increased investment in special education, mental health supports, and classroom resources. ETFO President Karen Brown stated, "Our students deserve better. The government must prioritize education funding."
Province-Wide Action
The Day of Action included rallies and information pickets at schools across Ontario. Similar events took place in Kitchener, Waterloo, and other regions. The unions emphasized that without adequate funding, class sizes will continue to grow and student success will be compromised.
Government Response
Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce responded by saying the government has increased education funding by $1.6 billion this year. However, union leaders argue that this is not enough to address systemic issues. "We need a long-term commitment to sustainable funding," said OSSTF President Harvey Bischof.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between the provincial government and education workers, who have been advocating for better working conditions and student supports for years.
