Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) faced a wave of hostile online responses from some supporters of Donald Trump on Sunday after she issued a measured and empathetic statement regarding the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
Statement Condemning Violence
“There is no place for political violence in our country,” the New York Democrat wrote on X, the platform owned by Elon Musk. “I am relieved that the President and the attendees at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last night are safe,” she added.
Despite the conciliatory tone, Ocasio-Cortez was met with a barrage of insults and accusations of hypocrisy. Critics pointed to her past criticism of Trump, his administration, and Republicans more broadly as evidence of inconsistency.
Defenders Highlight Decency
However, some observers noted the reaction itself as revealing. Longtime Republican strategist Sarah Longwell, publisher of the center-right-leaning Bulwark website, came to the congresswoman's defense. “This is a kind, responsible statement from an American politician. One the current President of the United States would never offer a political foe. (In fact he celebrates their deaths). And all the comments are just unhinged, vile attacks on her for what? Modeling decency?” Longwell wrote.
The incident underscores the deep political divisions in the country, where even a call for unity can become a flashpoint for controversy.
