Elections Alberta has launched an investigation into allegations that a list of electors was inappropriately distributed. The agency stated in a news release Thursday that while its own databases and systems remain secure, a third party—a registered party that legitimately received the list—may have misused or shared the information.
Official Statement and Concerns
“Due to the extremely sensitive nature of the information contained in the List of Electors, we believe it is critical for Albertans to be aware,” the release said. “Elections Alberta is taking every possible action to determine if this has taken place and, if so, to protect and recover the information.”
Social Media Claims
Late Wednesday, Thomas Lukaszuk, leader of the Forever Canada petition and former MLA, posted on X that he had learned and confirmed the voters list—containing personal contact information and addresses of all Albertans—was made available to Alberta separatists. He alleged that separatists set up an internal search engine to look up Albertans, calling it an “unprecedented illegal leak” aimed at helping them win a referendum and putting Albertans at risk.
Legal Framework
Section 19.1 of the Election Act requires that any person or registered party receiving the list must protect it, immediately notify Elections Alberta if it is lost, and prohibits sharing it with anyone not authorized under section 20 of the act.
The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected.
