Final Recounts Confirm Montreal Election Results
The last of ten judicial recounts from Montreal's recent municipal elections concluded on Thursday, confirming the original victory margins in all contested races. None of the recounts resulted in any changes to the initially declared winners, bringing closure to a process that had left several races in limbo.
St-Léonard Results Made Official
In the borough of St-Léonard, three specific recounts were requested and completed on Thursday. These covered the positions of borough mayor, city councillor for St-Léonard-Ouest, and borough councillor for St-Léonard-Ouest. The final tally confirmed Dominic Perri as the elected borough mayor and Gemma Marchione as the borough councillor, both from Ensemble Montréal.
The city council seat for St-Léonard-Ouest was won by Mauro Barone of the Équipe St-Léonard party. This party, led by Suzanne De Larochellière, had contested all three races. Following the final results, De Larochellière publicly congratulated the winners on social media, noting that "the process went very smoothly" and attributing vote differences to broader criteria for ballot rejection.
Composition of Montreal's New City Council
With all election results now finalized, the political landscape of Montreal's city council is clear. Ensemble Montréal will hold a majority with 34 seats, giving them a two-seat advantage. Projet Montréal follows with 25 members, while smaller parties including Équipe LaSalle Team, Équipe Anjou, and Mauro Barone from Équipe St-Léonard round out the council.
In St-Léonard specifically, the borough council will be controlled by Ensemble Montréal, consisting of Mayor Dominic Perri, city councillor Arj El Korbi, and borough councillors Linda Paquin and Gemma Marchione. Barone remains the sole elected representative from his party, though De Larochellière has committed to remaining as party leader and an engaged citizen.
The judicial recount process also confirmed victories in other Montreal districts, including the mayor's races in Lachine and Verdun, and various city and borough council positions across Côte-des-Neiges, Lachine, Saint-Jacques, Parc-Extension, and Île-Bizard—Ste-Geneviève. Élections Montréal confirmed the stability of the results in an official communication and indicated that full results would be published on Friday.
