A senior official from McPherson's campaign elaborated on this nuanced positioning, stating that while Ashton's working-class advocacy is commendable, McPherson offers additional strengths. "With Heather, you get all that, plus she's a member of Parliament and she's ready to go on day one," the official noted, suggesting that supporters should rank McPherson first on the preferential ballot. "Considering that the party doesn't even have official status right now, we need to rebuild trust in voters, and why not take a look at what's working in the provinces?" the spokesperson remarked, underscoring a pragmatic focus on electoral viability.

McPherson, while more measured in her comments, aligned with Ashton's emphasis on strengthening ties with provincial NDP parties.
