Saskatchewan NDP Donors Show Strong Support for Avi Lewis Despite Provincial Leader's Opposition
Federal NDP Leader Avi Lewis's victory in the party's leadership race has drawn swift criticism from Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck, but newly released contribution data reveals that party supporters in the province have a markedly different perspective on Lewis's leadership.
Provincial Leader's Public Rebuke of Federal Counterpart
In an open letter to Lewis, Beck strongly criticized his opposition to new fossil fuel developments, stating that the policy positions he advocated during his campaign "are antithetical to the values of a party built with and for working people." The Saskatchewan New Democrat leader went further by declining an invitation to meet with Lewis unless he reversed his stance on oil and gas development.
Beck's position represents a clear attempt to distance her provincial party from the new federal leadership, particularly on energy policy matters that are crucial to Saskatchewan's economy. This public disagreement highlights the ongoing tension between federal and provincial wings of the NDP regarding environmental and economic priorities.
Donation Data Reveals Different Story Among Saskatchewan Supporters
While the provincial leadership expresses opposition, financial contribution patterns tell a contrasting story. According to data from Elections Canada, more people from Saskatchewan contributed to Lewis's campaign than to any other candidate during the NDP leadership race.
The numbers are particularly striking: approximately 850 people from Saskatchewan donated more than $99,000 to candidates during the leadership contest. Of these contributors, 407 individuals gave roughly $47,300 to Lewis's campaign. This means Lewis received nearly half of all Saskatchewan donations in the race.
Remarkably, Lewis's fundraising in Saskatchewan surpassed that of all other nominees combined, demonstrating substantial grassroots support within the province despite the provincial leadership's public criticism.
National Fundraising Patterns Mirror Saskatchewan Support
The fundraising pattern observed in Saskatchewan was consistent with national trends. NDP MP Heather McPherson raised the second highest amount from Saskatchewan residents with nearly $22,000 from 171 donors, placing her a distant second to Lewis in provincial support.
Nationally, data from interim fundraising returns released by Elections Canada showed Lewis raised $1.23 million from 10,410 contributors across Canada. McPherson followed with 3,807 contributions totaling $560,143. This substantial fundraising advantage contributed to what Lewis described as "the largest mandate for any NDP leadership race in history."
Lewis Responds to Provincial Criticism
Speaking with reporters on March 30, Lewis addressed the disagreements with provincial wings of the party, characterizing them as "a sign of health" that indicated the party was growing and evolving. He emphasized that while he remains open to working with provincial leaders, his energy policies were integral to a platform that attracted thousands of new party members.
"We have a mandate from the members, and I have a responsibility to be consistent with the ideas that brought those folks into the party to support our campaign, and I'll continue to do that," Lewis stated, affirming his commitment to the policy positions that secured his leadership victory.
The divergence between provincial leadership criticism and donor support in Saskatchewan highlights the complex dynamics within political parties as they navigate regional economic interests against broader environmental and policy platforms. The substantial financial backing Lewis received from Saskatchewan residents suggests that many party supporters in the province align more closely with his vision than with their provincial leader's public position.
