Two people are dead after a vehicle plunged into a river near Montreal during a police chase, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
Incident Details
The crash occurred in Longueuil, a city south of Montreal, when a vehicle being pursued by police entered the water. Emergency responders recovered the bodies of two individuals from the submerged vehicle.
Police Investigation
Longueuil police said the chase began after officers attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver fled, leading to the pursuit that ended in the river. The Independent Investigations Office (BEI) has been called in to probe the circumstances surrounding the deaths, as is standard for any incident involving police.
No further details about the victims or the reason for the initial stop have been released. The BEI is expected to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
