Big City Mayors Call for Increased Federal Support

On June 4, 2026, members of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) big city mayors' caucus gathered at Edmonton's JW Marriott hotel to urge the federal government to provide more funding for housing and infrastructure projects. The mayors emphasized that cities are on the front lines of the housing crisis and need substantial financial assistance to meet growing demands.

Edmonton's mayor, along with counterparts from other major urban centers, highlighted the urgent need for investments in affordable housing, public transit, and roads. They argued that current federal contributions are insufficient to keep pace with population growth and aging infrastructure.

The caucus called for a long-term, predictable funding framework that would allow municipalities to plan effectively. They also stressed the importance of collaboration between all levels of government to address systemic issues such as homelessness and transportation bottlenecks.

Federal officials have acknowledged the concerns but have not yet committed to specific funding increases. The mayors plan to continue lobbying ahead of the next federal budget.
