The federal government has announced an additional $145 million to bolster security in Toronto and Vancouver during the FIFA World Cup 2026. This new funding comes on top of the $230 million previously allocated in January 2023 and $100 million designated for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Security Funding Details
Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, made the announcement during a press conference in Toronto on Wednesday. The funds are intended to support security operations in both host cities this summer. The money aims to alleviate the financial burden on provinces and municipalities as they prepare for one of the most complex sporting events globally.
“This funding will support provinces and municipalities in their efforts to ensure people remain safe while enjoying the tournament, and ensure law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to deliver a safe and well-managed event,” Anandasangaree stated.
Roles of Law Enforcement
The RCMP will handle national security and VIP protection, while local police forces in Toronto and Vancouver will manage local enforcement. The additional funds are designed to ensure all levels of law enforcement have the necessary resources.
World Cup Hosting
Canada is co-hosting the global soccer tournament with the United States and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Toronto will host six matches, and Vancouver will host seven. The security funding is part of broader preparations to ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans.
This investment underscores the government's commitment to delivering a secure and well-organized event. The funds will help cover operational costs, personnel, and equipment needed for security operations across both cities.
