Canadian nationalist influencer Nathan Cooke sparked controversy this week with a viral X post, claiming that immigrants have diluted Western civilization. The post featured a video supposedly demonstrating this decline, but the content was unexpectedly wholesome: a news clip of two Indian-Canadian men joyfully bhangra dancing in the snow while wearing Montreal Canadiens hockey jerseys.
The Viral Video and Its Context
The twenty-five-second clip, originally aired on Global News Montreal in 2017, shows Prateek Saini and Harshjot Singh Nijher dancing with smiles, as a reporter explains they immigrated to Canada five years prior and love hockey. Cooke's post, read by millions, criticized the men for exploiting broken government policies, but many respondents on X defended the dancers.
Canadian journalist Jonathan Kay called the video "awesome," while Western Standard columnist Cory Morgan noted it showed successful integration. Another user with twenty thousand likes emphasized that the men were celebrating community as Canadiens fans, not demanding separate representation.
Integration and Contributions
The men arrived in Canada around 2012 during the Harper era, when immigration focused on skilled labor. Since then, Singh Nijher co-founded Power Bhangra, a choreographic group that promotes cultural exchange. The group's Instagram shows performances supporting mental health awareness and the Girl Guides of Canada, as well as a video in front of Parliament with the caption: "O CANADA! Thank you for being so WARM, KIND and WELCOMING to all cultures and diversities!"
This incident highlights the positive aspects of immigration and cultural integration, countering narratives of exploitation. As one commenter noted, the dancers embody the spirit of community and shared passion for hockey, a quintessentially Canadian pastime.
