Canadian Passport Fees Increase Starting Tuesday, New 30-Day Processing Deadline
Canadian Passport Fees Rise with New Processing Deadline

Time is running out for Canadians to avoid paying higher fees for passport applications, as new rates take effect this week alongside a stricter processing timeline.

Fee Adjustments Reflect Inflation and Service Costs

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced earlier this month that passport fees will increase for applications received after Monday. This marks the first fee adjustment since 2013, implemented to maintain reliable service and address rising operational expenses.

The department stated that these changes are necessary to keep pace with inflation and the growing costs associated with producing secure travel documents while supporting applicants throughout the process.

Detailed Breakdown of New Passport Fees

The updated fee structure introduces modest increases for most standard passport services:

  • 10-year regular adult passports processed within Canada will increase by $3.50, from $160 to $163.50.
  • 5-year regular adult passports will see a $2.50 increase, rising from $120 to $122.50 when processed domestically.
  • 5-year regular child passports will cost an additional $1.50, moving from $57 to $58.50 for Canadian processing.

Passports processed outside Canada will be slightly more expensive under the new schedule. However, special services like urgent pickups and weekend processing will experience the most significant fee hikes, with some increasing by nearly $50.

New Processing Deadline and Refund Policy

Starting Wednesday, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada must process passport applications within 30 business days. If this deadline is exceeded, applicants will receive automatic refunds without needing to take any action.

The department emphasized that this policy ensures accountability and maintains service standards. Fees will now be adjusted annually based on inflation to support sustainable operations over time.

Important Application Considerations

Canadians should note that the new fees apply to applications received on or after Tuesday, regardless of when they were mailed. The department warned that there is often a delay between mailing and receipt, during which fee changes may occur.

This annual fee adjustment mechanism aims to provide consistency while covering the escalating costs of producing secure travel documents and supporting Canadian citizens through the application process.
