Duffy Slammed for Calling Musicians 'Libtards' at Fair

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy faced intense criticism on social media after he referred to musicians who declined to perform at the Great American State Fair as 'libtards.' The event, part of the Freedom 250 celebration for America's 250th birthday, is intended to be nonpartisan and 'engage all Americans,' according to a Freedom 250 spokesperson.

Duffy's Remarks at the Fair

On Wednesday, Duffy addressed the crowd at the fair in Washington, D.C., warming up for President Donald Trump. He praised the performers who did appear, including the Marine Band, Lee Greenwood, Christopher Macchio, and Alexis Wilkins, the girlfriend of FBI Director Kash Patel. However, he also took a swipe at those who opted out.

'I think we have to give a big round of applause for our military band and singers,' Duffy said. 'Way better than those libtards that canceled on us. So much better. Thank you, guys. President Trump will make you famous.'

Social Media Backlash

The comment quickly went viral, drawing mockery and condemnation. Critics pointed out that Duffy's insult validated the reasons artists gave for cancelling, and many noted his use of a term derived from a slur against people with intellectual disabilities, especially given that his youngest daughter has Down syndrome.

'Fucking hell, a high ranking Cabinet member using a term like “libtard” in official, public remarks?? How much lower into the gutter are we going to descend?' tweeted Jazzmom 2.0.

Aaron Blake commented, 'In one sentence, Duffy both complains about the musical acts who canceled and completely legitimizes their stated reason for doing so.'

Hemant Mehta simply wrote, 'Classy. Very classy.'

Criticism Over Duffy's Record

Others highlighted Duffy's past participation in a reality TV show for seven months while presumably serving the country. Norman Ornstein tweeted, 'Sean Duffy is unqualified for his job, and has spent more of his time doing reality TV than protecting Americans.' James Tate added, '7 month vacation asshole says what? F this guy.'

Several users expressed concern for Duffy's daughter. Jeff Potrykus noted, 'Libtards? In case folks didn't know, Duffy's youngest daughter was born with Down Syndrome.' Billie Nelson wrote, 'My heart breaks for his poor little girl! Shame on you Secretary! Your daughter deserves better than this despicable behavior!'

Official Response

Duffy did not respond to HuffPost's request for comment. A Freedom 250 spokesperson issued a statement saying, 'Freedom 250 is about patriotism, gratitude, unity, and confidence in America’s future.'
