University of Alberta law professor Eric Adams has been appointed as a judge to the Court of King's Bench of Alberta, filling the vacancy left by Edmonton-based Justice Bonnie Bokenfohr, who resigned effective January 30 of this year.
Federal Announcement
Federal Justice Minister and Attorney General Sean Fraser announced the selection late last week in a news release. 'I am confident he will serve the people of Alberta well,' Fraser wrote of Adams.
Background and Career
Adams was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He began his legal career in Toronto after completing undergraduate studies at McGill University and law school at Dalhousie University. He is widely considered an expert on constitutional law, having taught courses at the University of Alberta's law school since 2007.
Adams has received several accolades, including the Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal for services to advanced education and the Canadian Association of Law Teachers Academic Excellence Award.
He has frequently provided context and commentary to media outlets on various issues and has authored a number of opinion pieces for Postmedia in recent years.
Judicial Appointment
Adams will replace Justice Bonnie Bokenfohr, who resigned effective Jan. 30 of this year. His appointment is effective immediately.
