The renaming itself has already sparked controversy, largely due to its connection to a trademark deal with a Trump family company. Eric Trump wrote, "There is no person more deserving of this incredible honor than @realDonaldTrump! Congratulations Dad!" He added, "Looking forward to seeing flights landing at 'DJT' very very soon!"

The press team for California Governor Gavin Newsom, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, quickly responded. "Gas prices are up over 50% since your dad started a reckless war in Iran," the team wrote, sarcastically adding, "But congrats on the airport logo. Huge accomplishment!"
