Eric Trump on Monday unveiled a video teaser showcasing the planned library for his father, former President Donald Trump. The project, which Eric Trump stated he has worked on for six months, is set to be constructed in Miami, Florida. In a social media post, he described it as a landmark on the water that will serve as a lasting testament.
Video Features and Flaws
The video depicts a skyscraper with at least two oversized golden statues of Donald Trump, each with one arm raised. It also includes a former Air Force One jet, reportedly a gift from Qatar, which Trump has indicated will be donated to the library after his presidency. Additional elements appear to be a replica of a planned White House ballroom, the Oval Office, a Rose Garden replica, and a giant outdoor video screen displaying Trump. Notably, the video does not show any books, leading to criticism about the library's purpose.
Observers noted several potential flaws in the video, suggesting it might be AI-generated. For instance, a golden escalator over a wing of the Air Force One appears in one scene but is missing in others. In another shot, the text on the side of the plane, which should read "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," is garbled, displaying errors.
Ethical Concerns and Criticisms
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) highlighted ethical issues last year, pointing out that major U.S. corporations, including Meta, X, Disney, and Paramount, have pledged tens of millions of dollars to the library. She expressed concerns that these donations, made while Trump holds office and makes decisions affecting the donors, could raise questions about potential bribery and influence-peddling. Many of these gifts reportedly came in the form of settlements to lawsuits filed by Trump.
The Miami Herald reported that Trump's library foundation, which has nonprofit status, aims to raise $1 billion for the project. Critics have widely panned the renderings, calling the design a monument to bad taste and alleging it could become a slush fund for collecting bribes from wealthy individuals, fraudsters, federal contractors, and foreign governments.
Social Media Reactions
On social media, users mocked the library's design and concept. One comment joked about an "Epstein Files wing," while others compared the aesthetics to those of authoritarian leaders. Critics questioned the library's practicality, noting the absence of books and suggesting it might never be built due to financial mismanagement. Some pointed out the irony of such an extravagant project amid economic struggles for many Americans.
Additional criticisms focused on what the library would display, with users asking about Trump's accomplishments, such as failed policies and meetings. Concerns were also raised about potential uses for money laundering or data centers within the structure. Overall, the reaction has been largely negative, with many dismissing the project as tone-deaf and unlikely to materialize.
