Thousands of Ontarians lined highways and overpasses on Friday to honour fallen Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Brandon Malcolm, who was killed in a crash near Mallorytown earlier this week. The procession carried his body from Kingston to a funeral home in Brockville, passing through several communities as a mark of respect.
A Community in Mourning
The 42-year-old officer died Tuesday after his cruiser was struck by a transport truck on Highway 401. Malcolm, a 17-year veteran of the OPP, leaves behind his wife and two children. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues and the public alike.
Procession Route
The motorcade began at Kingston General Hospital, where Malcolm was taken after the crash, and proceeded west on Highway 401 to Brockville. Fire trucks, police cruisers and ambulances from multiple agencies joined the procession, their lights flashing in tribute.
At overpasses along the route, citizens gathered with Canadian flags and signs reading “Thank you for your service” and “Rest easy, brother.” The OPP estimated that thousands of people turned out despite the cold weather.
Remembering a Dedicated Officer
OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique said Malcolm was “a beloved member of the OPP family” and that his loss is deeply felt across the province. Malcolm had served in various roles, including as a frontline patrol officer and a member of the emergency response team.
The driver of the transport truck, a 38-year-old man from Quebec, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death. The investigation is ongoing.
Fundraising for Family
A GoFundMe campaign set up for Malcolm’s family has raised over $100,000. The OPP Association has also pledged support. “We will never forget his sacrifice,” said association president Rob Jamieson.
Funeral arrangements are pending, with a full regimental service expected. Malcolm’s death is the second line-of-duty fatality for the OPP in 2023.
