Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) lashed out at Maine Senate Democratic nominee Graham Platner on Friday, bashing his multiple scandals and declaring that “he’s not even a Democrat.”
Fetterman’s Criticism
“We’re the party of pearl clutching, and now we’ve embraced him, because ... we don’t have a choice. If you can’t really defend him, you could at least say, ‘Well, at least he has ... a D after his name,’ but he’s not even a Democrat,” Fetterman told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham.
Platner’s Scandals
Platner has been embroiled in controversy during his campaign. Many criticized his tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, as well as resurfaced Reddit posts about sexual assault in the military. Platner has also faced allegations of sexting women while married to his current wife, and in a recent New York Times report, some went into detail about Platner’s “unsettling behavior” in the past.
“If he was a Republican, how would Democrats describe him? And that description would be accurate, and for all of those things, they would declare this guy is degenerate,” Fetterman said.
No Support for Opponent
Despite his ruthless criticism, Fetterman told Ingraham he would not campaign for Platner’s opponent, GOP Sen. Susan Collins. Fetterman’s rebuke of Platner comes amid speculation on whether or not he will switch sides and join the Republican Party. Fetterman is no stranger to voting moderately and bashing his own party. However, Fetterman said he has “no plans” to leave the Democrats.
“My values have not changed, and I have always turned to those kinds of ideals that defined being a Democrat. I remain strongly pro-choice, pro-weed, pro-LGBT, pro-SNAP, pro-labor and even pro-ribeye over bio slop,” he wrote in an opinion piece in the Washington Post.
