Former Calgary MP Bobbie Sparrow, a Trailblazer for Women, Passes Away at 90

The city of Calgary and the nation are mourning the loss of former Member of Parliament Barbara "Bobbie" Sparrow, who passed away peacefully on February 19, 2026, at the age of 90. Sparrow, who served as MP for Calgary South from 1984 and Calgary Southwest from 1988, will be remembered as a formidable force in Canadian politics and a pioneering figure for women in leadership positions.

A Life of Service and Leadership

Born and raised in Toronto, Sparrow studied nursing before moving to Calgary with her husband, Bob, in 1956. She began her career as a surgical nurse at Holy Cross Hospital, demonstrating early on her commitment to helping others. Her leadership journey expanded as she took on significant roles with various organizations, including the Junior League of Calgary, the United Way, the University of Calgary, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

After her husband's death in 1973, Sparrow transitioned into leadership positions within the energy sector, showcasing her versatility and resilience. Her political career took off when she was elected as MP, where she served with distinction. From 1991 to 1993, she acted as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of National Health and Welfare, and in 1993, she was appointed concurrently as Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources and Minister of Forestry, a testament to her capabilities and trust placed in her by the government.

A Force to Be Reckoned With

Her son, Tom Sparrow, described her as "a force to be reckoned with," highlighting her high expectations and unwavering dedication. "She didn't do anything halfway. That's another thing I think she taught her children is, if you're going to do something, you have to give it your all," he said. Beyond hard work, Sparrow was known for her deep humility and compassion, always ready to assist friends, neighbors, and family in times of need.

Trailblazing for Women in Leadership

Sparrow's legacy extends beyond her political achievements; she was a trailblazer for women in leadership roles in Calgary and across Canada. At a time when institutions like the Ranchmen's Club restricted women's access, Sparrow boldly challenged norms, becoming one of the first women to enter through the front door. Her son noted, "As far as women being recognized and appreciated in public life and in leadership positions, I think she was one of those early adapters, one of those early stars that exemplified what women could and can do."

Throughout her life, she served on numerous boards and organizations, demonstrating leadership and breaking barriers. She took great pride in her federal government work but also cherished her contributions to various community boards, leaving an indelible mark on Canadian society.

Bobbie Sparrow's passing marks the end of an era, but her legacy as a dedicated public servant, compassionate leader, and pioneer for women will continue to inspire future generations.
