Fox News Host Jesse Watters Criticizes Kamala Harris's Appearance in Political Debate
Fox News host Jesse Watters ignited a firestorm of controversy during a recent episode of "The Five" by making disparaging comments about Vice President Kamala Harris's physical appearance. The discussion centered around a provocative report suggesting Democrats are prioritizing candidate attractiveness over traditional qualifications.
Panel Discussion Turns to Candidate Appearance
The Monday broadcast featured panelists reacting to a Bulwark report titled "Thirst Traps Over Think Tanks: Dems Want Hotter Candidates On The Ballot." Co-host Emily Compagno attributed this supposed trend to what she called "media fawning" over California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028. Fellow panelist Dana Perino suggested that the "Love Story" miniseries dramatizing the romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette has made Democrats nostalgic for the Kennedy era's glamour.
Watters' Controversial Comments About Harris
When it was his turn to speak, Watters launched into his analysis with characteristic bluntness. He directly challenged Perino's earlier remark that Harris was "objectively beautiful" despite her unsuccessful presidential bid.
"I have to disagree with Dana," Watters stated. "I didn't think Kamala was hot. I don't know. I mean, she was OK. But if we're talking hot, she's not hot."
Avoiding Discussion of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
The conversation took another turn when co-panelist Greg Gutfeld mentioned Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Watters immediately shut down any discussion about the New York Democrat, responding "I'm not going to go there." This abrupt refusal likely stems from previous controversies between the two.
In January, Ocasio-Cortez accused Watters of sexual harassment for comments he made on his show months earlier, when he sarcastically claimed she wanted to have sex with White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. She stated publicly that "He has sexualized me on his show. He has sexually harassed me on his show. He has engaged in horrific, sexually exploitative rhetoric."
Watters' Broader Take on Attractiveness in Politics
Watters then expanded his commentary to address the general subject of physical appearance in political candidates. He offered a historical perspective on how television has changed political standards.
"Did you ever see the politicians before television? It was like old fat guys with no hair, with muttonchop sideburns," Watters remarked. "So, TV is the thing. You've got to have a good-looking person, and now I like the fact that Democrats have gone from, like, 'we need a transgender native American amputee' to just someone who is hot. And I feel like that's progress."
This final comment drew particular attention for its reduction of identity politics to superficial characteristics and its suggestion that prioritizing physical attractiveness represents political advancement.
The segment has generated significant backlash across social media and political commentary circles, with critics accusing Watters of engaging in sexist discourse and reducing female politicians to their physical appearance rather than their qualifications or policy positions.
