A Gatineau man has been charged following an investigation into alleged threats made against a mosque in the Aylmer sector. The Gatineau Police Service announced the arrest on Friday, May 1, 2026, after receiving reports of threatening statements directed at the Islamic Centre of Aylmer.
Details of the Incident
According to police, the suspect, a 34-year-old man, was taken into custody without incident on Thursday evening. He is facing charges of uttering threats and mischief. The investigation began after community members reported the threats to authorities earlier this week.
Police have not released the suspect's name to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. The mosque has been provided with additional security measures as a precaution.
Community Response
Local Muslim leaders expressed relief at the swift police action. "We are grateful to the Gatineau Police for their prompt response and professionalism," said Imam Hassan Ali of the Islamic Centre of Aylmer. "This incident has shaken our community, but we remain united against hate."
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) also condemned the threats, calling for increased vigilance. "No community should face such intimidation," stated a NCCM spokesperson.
Legal Proceedings
The accused appeared in court on Friday morning and was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison for uttering threats and up to two years for mischief.
