Finance Minister Eric Girard Endorses Christine Fréchette for CAQ Leadership
Finance Minister Eric Girard has publicly thrown his support behind Christine Fréchette in the race to become the next leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) and premier of Quebec. Girard announced his endorsement at a press conference in Montreal on Monday, March 23, 2026, standing alongside Fréchette and fellow MNA France-Élaine Duranceau, who also backed Fréchette over the weekend.
Girard's Statement on the Endorsement
In his remarks to reporters, Girard expressed respect for both candidates but emphasized that Fréchette embodies the vision needed for the party's future. "I have worked with both candidates, so I know them both very well. And I have a lot of respect for my colleague Bernard as well. But it’s clear that Christine embodies the vision, she represents a movement," Girard said. "The party will change with the departure of its founder, and Christine represents an evolution that I like." This endorsement marks a shift from earlier reports suggesting Girard would remain neutral in the leadership contest.
Context of the CAQ Leadership Race
The leadership race follows the departure of CAQ founder François Legault last month, creating uncertainty about the party's direction. Fréchette and Bernard Drainville have emerged as the primary contenders for the role. Girard's endorsement significantly boosts Fréchette's campaign, as he is now the 37th member of the 79-member CAQ caucus to support her, compared to 14 for Drainville. Among cabinet ministers, 16 have endorsed Fréchette, while only one, youth minister Samuel Poulin, has backed Drainville.
Fellow Endorsements and Future Implications
France-Élaine Duranceau, who endorsed Fréchette earlier, joined Girard at the press conference, highlighting a united front. In response, Fréchette indicated that both Duranceau and Girard would likely have roles in her cabinet if elected. "Now, I’m not going to specify the roles they would be called upon to take, but rest assured that their expertise — their vast expertise — will be put to good use. It is expertise that is indispensable for Quebecers, particularly in the current geopolitical context," Fréchette stated.
Upcoming Leadership Election
The results of the CAQ leadership election are scheduled to be announced on April 12, 2026. This endorsement from a key figure like Girard could influence the outcome, as it underscores Fréchette's growing momentum within the party. The race continues to draw attention as Quebecers watch closely to see who will lead the CAQ into its next chapter.
