Marjorie Taylor Greene Condemns Trump's AI-Generated Jesus Portrayal as Blasphemy

Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, launched a sharp rebuke against former President Donald Trump on Monday, criticizing him for posting an artificial intelligence-generated image on social media that depicted him as a Jesus-like figure. Greene labeled the post as "blasphemy" and publicly urged Trump to issue an apology for the controversial content.

Greene's Interview on CNN: A Firm Stance Against the Image

During an appearance on CNN's "The Source" with host Kaitlan Collins, Greene was asked if she accepted Trump's explanation that he believed the image portrayed him as a doctor rather than Jesus. "No, absolutely not — I thought that was blasphemy," Greene responded emphatically. She elaborated, stating, "As a Christian, I was very offended. And a doctor? President Trump is not a doctor, and that picture had him in a robe, as Jesus is often portrayed, with light coming out of his hands, and he talked about healing people, like a Red Cross worker."

Greene continued her critique, arguing that the image's depiction of Trump saving lives was inappropriate and offensive to many believers. "I think there would be many people that would argue with that, you know, saving lives. So, I think it was blasphemy. I was offended. I think he should apologize, not act defensive. And many Christians across America and the world were very offended by that," she asserted.

Details of the Controversial AI Image and Trump's Response

The image in question, which Trump shared on Sunday, showed him as a robed Christ-like figure with a healing hand placed on a suffering man. In the background, everyday Americans such as a soldier and a nurse looked up at him in awe, while bald eagles and an American flag flew overhead. Following widespread backlash, including criticism from right-wing voices and religious figures, Trump and his team removed the post. Trump later insisted that he thought the image depicted him as a doctor, not Jesus.

This incident is not isolated; Trump and his team have previously shared numerous over-the-top AI-generated images, but this particular post drew significant condemnation due to its religious connotations. Notably, Trump shared the image after criticizing Pope Leo XIV amid calls for peace in the Iran war, adding another layer of controversy to the timing.

Collins Highlights Greene's Past Comparisons of Trump to Jesus

During the interview, Collins pointed out a seeming contradiction in Greene's stance, noting that Greene herself has compared Trump to Jesus in the past. The CNN host played a clip from 2023 where Greene likened Trump to Jesus during his trial for sexual battery and defamation against author E. Jean Carroll. In that clip, Greene stated that Trump was among "some of the most incredible people in history being arrested," listing Nelson Mandela and Jesus as examples.

Greene addressed this past comment, explaining, "We were talking about people being prosecuted unfairly by weaponization of government, political prosecutions, things that — such as like political protesters. That's what I was referring to there. ... I think that was completely different." She emphasized that her previous comparison was in the context of political persecution, not a visual portrayal akin to the AI image.

Greene and Trump's Ongoing Differences on Key Issues

Greene also touched on her ongoing disagreements with Trump, highlighting issues such as U.S. military funding for Israel and his stance on releasing Justice Department files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She revealed that these differences led Trump to call her a "traitor" and threaten to run a primary opponent against her. "So I think that's a completely different comparison," Greene concluded, distancing her past remarks from the current controversy over the AI image.

This public denunciation marks a notable moment in the relationship between Greene and Trump, underscoring tensions within the Republican Party over religious sensitivity and political imagery. As the debate continues, Greene's call for an apology reflects broader concerns about the use of AI in political messaging and its potential to offend religious communities.
