Mehdi Hasan Challenges Republican Fiscal Conservative Narrative, Criticizes Trump's Iran War Economic Impact

In a pointed Monday discussion, journalist Mehdi Hasan systematically dismantled the long-held Republican claim of being the party of fiscal conservatism, presenting counter-evidence while sharply criticizing former President Donald Trump for his costly and ongoing military engagement with Iran.

Energy Price Surge Following Strait of Hormuz Closure

During a live-streamed conversation with Zeteo reporter Prem Thakker, Hasan addressed the global spike in energy prices triggered by Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This critical waterway facilitates approximately one-fifth of the world's oil transportation, and its shutdown followed Trump's military strikes against Iran last month.

"Donald Trump's response is to simply dismiss it and attack people for criticizing him," Hasan stated. "And say, 'Well, you need to endure short-term high prices, it'll be fine later.' Which is not what he said on the campaign trail."

The Zeteo founder elaborated further, noting Trump's unfulfilled campaign promises. "He said he was going to reduce prices on day one, which he already failed to do. Inflation has not gone down in the year he's been in office, his tariffs bumped up inflation and now we're going to have this massive oil price shock."

Contrast Between Campaign Rhetoric and Presidential Actions

Trump had repeatedly pledged during his campaign to lower general prices, combat inflation, and withdraw the United States from what he termed wasteful foreign interventions. Instead, costs have risen significantly, and his administration initiated another military conflict.

According to AAA, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline skyrocketed to $3.54 on Tuesday, a dramatic increase from last month's average of $2.92. Trump responded to concerns on Sunday, declaring this "a very small price to pay for U.S.A." and asserting that "ONLY FOOLS WOULD THINK DIFFERENTLY!"

Historical Economic Patterns Under Republican Administrations

Hasan highlighted a compelling economic pattern, noting that "10 of the last 11 recessions" in the United States commenced during Republican presidencies.

"One of the great mysteries of my life as a journalist covering politics is how on earth the Republican Party got the reputation of being the sound-on-the-economy party, being ... the fiscally responsible party, as the party you trust with your 401(k)," Hasan remarked.

He continued with a stark assessment of historical trends. "And yet they're the ones who always plunge us into recession. In fact, every Republican president comes to office, cuts taxes for the rich, cuts benefits for the poor, starts a Middle East war and gets a recession. Every single one."

Specific Examples and Broader Economic Warnings

Hasan cited former Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush as examples, all of whom presided over economic recessions while engaging in various foreign and domestic policy decisions that aligned with his critique.

Expressing grave concern about the potential economic fallout from current policies, Hasan warned, "I think the economic costs, I don't think we quite realize how bad they're going to be. This could be worse than the Great Recession. This could be worse than the 1970s. You know, Trump was able to blame COVID for a lot of his first-term economic disaster."

He argued that Trump would lack credible scapegoats for any coming economic turmoil. "This time around, who's he going to blame? He's going to blame Iran. I don't think people are going to buy it, if you look at the polls. He's going to blame Israel; good luck with that. He's going to blame Democrats. ... But this is a disaster of his own making."
