Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume warned on Wednesday that Republicans would likely lose control of the House and potentially the Senate if the 2026 midterm elections were held today. Speaking on Special Report with Bret Baier, Hume stated, “I think if the election were held today, given in the middle of this conflict, that the House would be obviously gone. And there’s a good chance that the Senate would go, too.”
Hume emphasized that the outcome of Donald Trump’s military actions in Iran would be a decisive factor. He noted that voters are concerned about the economy, and Republicans are likely to face backlash. “There’s some hope I think among Republicans that if we get a successful outcome of this war in Iran … that the gasoline prices and other fuel prices will come down, people will feel better about the economy,” Hume explained.
He added that the Trump administration’s tax and regulatory policies could strengthen growth, potentially improving the party’s midterm prospects. However, Hume described the House as “a long shot” for Republicans, citing their narrow majority and historical trends where the president’s party loses seats in the first midterm.
Hume concluded that the Iran war’s outcome is critical. “If it turns out well, I think the president would have a lot to run on and the party would swing behind that. If it turns out in a way that is unconvincing to people that it was worth it, woe be unto the Republicans.”
