Iranian Demonstrators Rally in Ottawa, March to U.S. Embassy in Support of Strikes

On Sunday, March 8, approximately 1,000 Iranian supporters assembled on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and proceeded to march towards the U.S. Embassy. The rally occurred as strikes on Iran entered their ninth day, with participants expressing strong support for the military actions initiated by the United States and Israel.

Praise for Trump and Netanyahu, Calls for Pahlavi's Leadership

The demonstrators chanted praises for U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who launched a series of strikes on Iran on February 28. These attacks resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior Iranian officials. In response, Iran conducted retaliatory strikes on U.S. army bases in the Middle East.

Many ralliers held signs featuring the face of Reza Pahlavi, Iran's exiled crown prince, and chanted slogans such as "This is the final battle, Pahlavi will return." They called for Pahlavi to become the country's next leader, with some wearing red caps and displaying signs that read, "Make Iran Great Again." The majority waved the lion and sun flag, a symbol of resistance against the current Iranian regime.

Security Measures and Official Responses

Dozens of police officers, including undercover plainclothes personnel, were stationed along Wellington Street to monitor the event. Although rumors of a counter-protest circulated, an officer with the Parliamentary Protective Service stated there were no credible sources confirming such plans. Earlier in the week, the RCMP and Ottawa Police Service had announced increased security at embassies and religious institutions due to the ongoing situation in Iran.

Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the conflict on Wednesday, March 4, affirming that Canada would "defend our allies" and not ruling out future military operations. He stood by his initial support for the U.S. and Israeli attacks, while also emphasizing a desire to see tensions lowered. "In terms of war, there are likelihoods, there are possibilities, you have to plan for the worst, but there are no certainties in conflict," Carney told reporters outside parliament in Australia.

Humanitarian Impact and Canadian Involvement

The Associated Press reported on Sunday that the death toll from the conflict continues to rise, with approximately 1,230 people killed in Iran, over 290 in Lebanon, and dozens in Israel. In an update, federal officials revealed that around 3,152 Canadians in Iran were registered with Global Affairs Canada (GAC), which has received 440 requests for consular assistance and 220 requests for help departing the region. Additionally, about 24,101 Canadians in Lebanon were registered with GAC, with 784 consular assistance requests and 398 departure assistance requests.

The rally highlighted the complex international dynamics and domestic sentiments surrounding the Iran conflict, as protesters in Ottawa voiced their alignment with foreign military actions and political change in their homeland.
