Japan and Australia have agreed to deepen their cooperation in the areas of energy, defence, and critical minerals, according to an announcement made during Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's visit to Canberra. The agreement was reached on Sunday, May 3, 2026, as Takaichi met with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
The partnership aims to strengthen bilateral ties and address shared challenges, including energy security and supply chain resilience for critical minerals essential for technology and defence. Both nations emphasized the importance of diversifying sources and reducing dependence on any single country for these resources.
In the defence sector, the two countries will enhance joint exercises and information sharing, reflecting their mutual commitment to regional stability. The agreement also includes collaboration on clean energy technologies and infrastructure projects.
This deepening of ties comes amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, highlighting the strategic alignment between Japan and Australia. The leaders expressed optimism about the future of their partnership, which they believe will contribute to economic growth and security for both nations.
