Jewish Advocacy Group Demands Action from Ontario Government After Synagogue Shootings
As the Ontario legislature resumed its spring session following an extended break, a prominent Canadian Jewish organization issued a forceful demand for Queen's Park to prioritize the safety of Jewish communities across the province.
In a statement released on Monday, Michelle Stock, Ontario vice-president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), emphasized that recent violent incidents targeting Jewish institutions highlight the urgent need for immediate and effective governmental response.
Recent Attacks Highlight Escalating Threats
"Recently, three synagogues in the Greater Toronto Area were struck by gunfire," Stock stated. "Extremist protesters have openly threatened violence, glorified terrorism, and displayed dehumanizing imagery targeting Jewish people. Additionally, one of Canada's intelligence agencies has warned that a violent extremist attack against the Jewish community remains a realistic possibility."
Stock described the situation as "deeply alarming" and part of a broader pattern of escalating antisemitism that has left many Jewish families questioning their fundamental safety in Ontario.
The attacks included gunfire targeting Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto synagogue in Thornhill on March 6, 2026, marking a disturbing escalation in violence against Jewish institutions.
Call to Action for Elected Officials
Stock asserted that these attacks should serve as a stark wake-up call for every elected official in Ontario. She pointed to a pattern of harassment and intimidation that began almost immediately after the October 7, 2023 attacks in Israel, with Toronto Police responding to over 800 demonstrations since that time.
The advocacy group documented frequent vandalism of Jewish-owned businesses, disruptive holiday protests in stores and shopping malls, and marches through Toronto's Jewish neighborhoods where participants harassed and intimidated residents.
International Concern and Government Demands
Canada's surge in unchecked antisemitism has sparked international concern, with Israel's deputy foreign minister Sharren Haskel telling media earlier this month that the RCMP should take charge of investigations to prevent potential Islamist terror attacks similar to those experienced in Australia.
In response to the escalating threats, CIJA has presented three specific requests to Premier Doug Ford's government:
- Enhanced Security Measures: Increase security provisions for Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centers across Ontario.
- Law Enforcement Accountability: Ensure existing hate crime laws are rigorously enforced and offenders are held fully accountable for their actions.
- Educational Environment Safety: Hold school boards and administrative bodies accountable for maintaining safe learning environments for all students.
"For more than two years, extremists have targeted Jewish neighborhoods, institutions, and community members across Ontario," Stock emphasized. "Harassment, vandalism, and intimidation have become disturbingly routine. This cannot become the new normal."
The advocacy group expects the Ford government to fulfill previous commitments made to Toronto's Jewish community regarding concrete protective actions. As antisemitic incidents continue to rise, CIJA's demands highlight growing concerns about community safety and governmental responsibility in addressing hate-motivated violence.
