House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) raised eyebrows on Monday after describing Republicans as “the grownups,” while attacking Democrats. Johnson, appearing on Newsmax, accused Democrats of suffering from so-called “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” which is not a medical diagnosis but an insult frequently hurled by Republicans to dismiss criticism of Donald Trump.
“They have full-on Trump Derangement Syndrome, OK? And it informs how they see the world, how they react, and how irresponsible they are — and that’s now on full display for the whole country,” Johnson claimed. “I hope voters will remember this in the fall. You’ve got to keep the grownups in charge — and that’s the Republicans,” he added.
The characterization of Republicans as “grownups” quickly drew pushback on social media from critics. Many users highlighted what they saw as contradictions in Johnson’s statement. One critic wrote, “Ah yes, the ‘grownups’ who let Trump start a new war, trashed the economy, and are rock hard for a new White House ballroom, all while ICE kills US citizens. Those the ‘grownups’ he’s referring to?” Another user remarked, “We gave them the house, senate, and presidency and what have they done? Literally name one thing. Longest shutdowns, no save act, no protection of warrantless spying, hundreds of billions in aid to their favorite country, high gas prices, no one can afford anything.”
Other comments were more pointed. One user stated, “You’ve done absolutely nothing with all three branches of government. Here’s my gloved middle finger and my boot- see what you can do with those.” Another observer noted, “He’s never looked more like a hostage pleading for help lol.” A critic added, “Voters don’t need to ‘remember’ anything. They see every day what they are paying for gas, groceries, electricity and everything else and they see Republicans prioritizing taxpayer money for Trump’s ballroom bunker palace. They will take that to the ballot box.”
Several users expressed disbelief at Johnson’s remarks. One asked, “Is he serious???” while another said, “The delusional arrogance of these people is astounding.” A user focused on economic concerns: “Sorry Mike but failed republican policies have put groceries at $100 a bag.” Another critic wrote, “Really! They have added trillions of dollars to the national debt. Trump declares that they can’t afford Medicaid, children programs because they are fighting a senseless war of choice. These aren’t adults, they are a bunch of lawless juveniles pretending to be mature adults!”
One user offered a correction: “’Grownups’ should be ‘perpetual adolescents.’ Fixed it for you.” Another simply said, “Come on man.” A reminder was also posted: “Just a reminder that Republicans spent the last couple days obsessing over a ballroom, all as voters complain about increased prices.” The backlash underscores the divisive nature of Johnson’s comments and the ongoing political tensions ahead of the fall elections.
