Austrian Man Convicted of Planning Attack on Taylor Swift Concert
Man Convicted for Taylor Swift Concert Attack Plot in Austria

A 21-year-old Austrian man, identified as Beran A. in accordance with local privacy laws, was convicted on Thursday by a state court in Wiener Neustadt for his involvement in a plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna nearly two years ago. The verdict was reported by the Austria Press Agency (APA), which noted that the charges were related to the planned assault on the Eras Tour event.

Details of the Plot

Beran A. allegedly intended to target fans outside the Ernst Happel Stadium using knives or homemade explosives. The plot was foiled by authorities, but the three scheduled concerts in August 2024 were ultimately canceled, devastating tens of thousands of Swifties who had traveled to Austria for the performances. Many gathered in central Vienna to trade friendship bracelets and share their disappointment.

During the trial, the defendant's attorney stated that Beran A. admitted to the charges directly linked to the concert plot on the first day of proceedings. In his final words to the court before deliberations, Beran A. expressed remorse, saying, "I would just like to say that I am sorry."

Broader Terror Network

Prosecutors revealed that Beran A. had networked with members of the Islamic State (IS) group, discussing the purchase of weapons and bomb-making. He also allegedly sought to illegally buy weapons in the days leading up to the concerts and swore allegiance to the militant group. The court heard that the plot involved simultaneous attacks planned in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan 2024.

Beran A. was tried alongside Arda K., another 21-year-old whose identity remains protected. A third suspect, Hasan E., is in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia, accused of stabbing a security officer in Mecca in March 2024 and wounding three other officers and a woman before being arrested.

Verdict and Charges

While Beran A. pleaded not guilty to charges related to the broader simultaneous attack plot, the court found both him and Arda K. guilty of contributing to attempted murder. This charge stems from Hasan E.'s alleged stabbing of a security officer in Mecca. However, only Beran A. faced charges specifically tied to the Taylor Swift concert plot. The court's decision marks a significant step in addressing the terror threat that disrupted one of the biggest musical tours in history.
