Mojtaba Khamenei Emerges as Leading Candidate for Iran's Supreme Leadership
The Assembly of Experts, the clerical body responsible for selecting Iran's next Supreme Leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly identified his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the most probable successor. According to Iranian officials speaking to The New York Times, the 56-year-old cleric has emerged as the front-runner in the succession process.
Delayed Announcement Amid Security Concerns
Iranian authorities were considering announcing Mojtaba Khamenei's selection as early as Wednesday, but reportedly hesitated due to concerns about making him a target. The Assembly of Experts, comprising 88 senior clerics, held two meetings—one in the morning and another in the evening—to deliberate on the critical leadership transition.
London-based Iran International, an anti-regime news outlet, reported with certainty that the clerics had elected Mojtaba Khamenei, though no official Iranian source confirmed this development. Analysts told the outlet that Mojtaba is recognized as one of the architects behind the repression of Iran's civilian population and maintains close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Israeli Military Operations and Threats
The succession process unfolded against a backdrop of escalating military tensions. On Tuesday, Israel's air force struck a building in Qom, a Shia power center where the Assembly was scheduled to meet, in what reports described as an attempt to disrupt the leadership selection process. Iranian state-linked media reported the building was empty at the time of the strike.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning on Wednesday, stating, "Any leader appointed by the Iranian terror regime to continue the plan for Israel's destruction, to threaten the U.S. and the free world and the countries of the region, and to oppress the Iranian nation, will be an unequivocal target for elimination."
Katz emphasized that "It doesn't matter what his name is or the place where he hides," and revealed that he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to prepare and act using all means necessary as part of 'Operation Lion's Roar' objectives.
Expanded Military Campaign
On Wednesday morning Israel time, the IDF announced it had completed another wave of strikes against Iranian regime headquarters across Tehran. Military officials stated that dozens of munitions were dropped on Basij and internal security command centers used by the Iranian regime to maintain control throughout the country and conduct situational assessments.
