Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Yerevan, Armenia, on Saturday to attend the 8th summit of the European Political Community. The summit brings together leaders from across Europe and neighboring countries to discuss pressing geopolitical and economic issues.
Trade tensions with the United States
Carney is expected to meet with European Union leaders amid growing trade tensions between Canada, Europe, and the United States. The discussions come as the Trump administration has signaled potential tariff increases and trade barriers, prompting Canada and the EU to seek closer cooperation. The prime minister's agenda includes bilateral meetings with several European heads of state to strengthen economic ties and coordinate responses to US trade policies.
Canada's role in the European Political Community
Canada is one of the non-European members of the European Political Community, which was established in 2022 to foster dialogue and cooperation on security, energy, and migration. The summit in Yerevan marks the first time the community has met in the South Caucasus region, highlighting Armenia's strategic importance.
Carney's participation underscores Canada's commitment to multilateralism and its desire to diversify trade partnerships. The prime minister is also scheduled to discuss support for Ukraine, energy security, and climate change initiatives. The Canadian delegation includes senior officials from Global Affairs Canada and the Prime Minister's Office.
The summit coincides with ongoing protests in Armenia over border disputes with Azerbaijan, and security has been heightened in Yerevan. Carney's visit is expected to last two days, with a joint press conference planned for Sunday.
