Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre delivered a major speech in downtown Calgary on Monday, urging central Canadians to pay close attention to separatist sentiments in Alberta and to make efforts to address the province's grievances, similar to those made for Quebec. Poilievre, a native Calgarian and MP for Battle River-Crowfoot, launched a provincewide tour promoting the theme 'a strong Alberta within a united Canada.'
Poilievre's Call for Federal Action
Poilievre blamed a decade of poor federal policies and intrusions by Ottawa into provincial jurisdiction for fueling separatist anger. He called for improving housing and food affordability, enabling provinces to extract and export natural resources, respecting firearm owners' rights, ensuring serious criminals remain behind bars, and promoting personal freedom to foster free enterprise. He argued that if the federal government implemented these measures, it would significantly reduce separatist momentum.
Fiscal Inequity and Disrespect
Poilievre highlighted two major frustrations for Albertans: fiscal inequity in Confederation and a lack of respect from central Canada. He noted that between 2007 and 2024, Albertans contributed approximately $260 billion more to the federal government than they received back, with the total overpayment approaching half a trillion dollars since the 1960s. Despite having only one-third of Ontario's population, Albertans have been the largest contributors to Confederation for years.
He also criticized the Trudeau government for attempting to shut down Alberta's largest industry—oil and gas—without offering comparable job alternatives, unlike the billions invested in electric vehicle plants in Ontario and Quebec. Poilievre urged central Canadians to show the same effort to placate Alberta as they have for Quebec during separatist movements.
National Unity Tour
Poilievre's speech at the Royal Canadian Legion in downtown Calgary marked the beginning of a provincewide tour aimed at reinforcing national unity. He emphasized that a strong Alberta within a united Canada is essential for the country's future.
