Key Communications Role in Conservative Party Leadership Undergoes Change

OTTAWA — A significant staffing change has occurred within the Office of the Opposition Leader as Katy Merrifield, the communications director for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, announced her departure this week. Merrifield confirmed that Friday will mark her final day in the position she has held for approximately one year.

Transition in Conservative Communications Leadership

Merrifield assumed her role shortly after the 2025 federal election, taking over from former communications director Ben Woodfinden, who had served since 2022. Her appointment came during a particularly challenging period for the Conservative Party, which had narrowly missed forming government in that election despite riding high in polls as the Justin Trudeau government faced significant difficulties.

The political landscape shifted dramatically when Trudeau's resignation was followed by the Liberal Party selecting Mark Carney as their new leader. Carney, a political outsider without a parliamentary seat, became the face of a remarkable Liberal resurgence that ultimately dashed Conservative hopes of forming government.

Merrifield's Political Background and Challenges

Before joining Poilievre's office, Merrifield built substantial political communications experience across multiple jurisdictions. She previously served as the British Columbia head of Poilievre's leadership campaign team in 2022, worked as executive communications and planning director for former Alberta premier Jason Kenney, and from 2016 to 2017 headed communications for former B.C. premier Christy Clark.

Her tenure coincided with ongoing challenges for the Conservative Party, including Poilievre's need to win a seat in a byelection to re-enter the House of Commons and a stream of floor-crossers, most recently with Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong MP Marilyn Gladu leaving the party for the Liberals on Wednesday.

Conservative Colleagues Offer High Praise

Conservative caucus members expressed unanimous praise for Merrifield's work, telling media outlets she performed excellently under difficult circumstances. They credited her with making positive adjustments to the Opposition leader's media strategy, including opening new venues for Poilievre to spread his party's message and showcasing more Conservative MPs across different media outlets.

Deputy Conservative leader Melissa Lantsman described Merrifield as both smart and funny, stating she had nothing but great things to say about her former colleague. "(Merrifield) is relentlessly dedicated in a business that can grind that out of you fast," Lantsman told reporters. "I'm proud to know her and excited for what she does next."

Staffing Changes and Succession Plan

With Merrifield's departure, communications manager Micah Green will step into the role of communications director, while media relations manager Sam Lilly will become the Opposition Leader's Office's new director of media relations. This transition comes nearly a year after former media relations director Sebastian Skamski left the party.

The Conservative communications team now faces the task of maintaining momentum during a period of political transition, as the party continues to position itself as the government-in-waiting while navigating the complexities of minority parliament dynamics and internal party cohesion.
