York Regional Police are searching for a suspect who allegedly attempted to enter a synagogue in Thornhill on April 25 and then assaulted a person walking nearby after being denied entry.

On April 25, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., police responded to reports of a disturbance at a synagogue in the area of Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue. Investigators say a male suspect tried to gain access to the place of worship but was refused entry by staff. He then left the premises and, shortly after, allegedly assaulted a person who was walking in the vicinity.
The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The suspect fled the area before officers arrived.
Suspect Description
Police have released photos of the suspect, described as a white male with a medium build, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and a baseball cap. He was last seen heading south on Bathurst Street.
York Regional Police are urging anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
This incident is being investigated as a hate-motivated crime, given the targeted nature of the location. Authorities are increasing patrols in the area to ensure community safety.
